This is a transcript for the video Crime Scene Simulation Lab 360

Speaker 1:
Okay. So I’m just come into this crime scene. And the first thing that I’m going to do is have a look around and see if I can find any trace evidence items. Obviously we have a lot of the bigger trace items, but we’re going to leave those for now and make sure that we’re not trampling any extra evidence. So I’m going to turn off the lights and use my crime light, to have a look on the floor and see if I can find anything. So straightaway I can see that there are some hairs on the floor and there are also some footwear impressions. So I’m going to mark those up with my evidence markers. And that way I can make sure that when people come into the scene, that I have something called a path of contamination so that people will follow where I have walked, and not step on any trace items that I’ve identified.

Speaker 1:
So once I think I’ve found all of the trace items on the floor that I think are visible and can potentially be of use, I can then turn the light on. And make sure that I maintain that same path. And then from there I can start marking up any other trace items that I think might be of use for us. So for instance over here, we can see that there is a deceased person on the floor. And on the other side of the deceased, there is some blood stain patterns. So I’ll mark these ones up. So that we can take photos of them and document them later. As you can see, we’ve got a little bit of a hand impression here, so that might be useful for finger marks. We also have the patterns themselves, so we can look at those to get some information about the type of activity that took place in this space.

Speaker 1:
Also from the blood stain pattern down here, you can see that there is some direction to this blood spatter, which again might give us some information as to the activity that took place. The final thing that I will do after I’m marking up all of the larger pieces of obvious evidence, will be to look around and see if there’s anything that I can’t see with my naked eye, that could potentially be useful to me. So for instance over here, I’ve got a sink and also a mirror, which is a likely place that you might find some finger mark impressions. So that’s somewhere that I may want to come back in and do some powdering later on to see if I can see those finger marks.

Speaker 1:
Activities like this will be included in a bunch of different subjects throughout the forensics degrees here at UTS. So we do things like crime scene investigation, major scene investigation, and also homicide investigation as well.
