This is the transcript for the video Scholarships at UTS for international students

Kelly Soo:

Welcome to the 14 million UTS International Scholarship session. I am Kelly Soo, manager, International Scholarships.

Richard Lum:

And I’m Richard Lum, manager at International Sponsored Students.

Kelly Soo:

UTS introduced a scholarship scheme valued at 14 million this year for eligible undergraduate and postgraduate coursework international students. This session will cover information on UTS scholarships and government sponsorships. In the next 20 minutes or so, we will tell you a bit about the various UTS scholarships available to new international students, government sponsorships, how to find scholarship information on our website, how to apply for UTS scholarships, as well as answer some of the questions you may have for us. At UTS, we want to recognise your academic achievement prior to commencing with us. If you have completed a recognised qualification and applying for an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework programme, you may be eligible for one of the tuition fee scholarships offered to new international students.

Scholarships listed here are non-faculty specific scholarships or grants. The scholarships in the white boxes are offered to undergraduate students and do not require a separate scholarship application. Scholarships in red are offered to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and they require a separate scholarship application. I will go through in more detail on how to apply for scholarships later in my slides. Lastly, the scholarships in blue are offered to postgraduate coursework students only. Some of you may already know the course or study area. In this case, there are some scholarships available by study area or faculty. Scholarships in red boxes are scholarships available to postgraduate students while those in blue are for undergraduate students. These scholarships ranges from 25% tuition fee scholarships for the cost duration, as well as one of scholarships of $5,000.

Richard Lum:

The Australian government also provides scholarship. It is the Australia Awards Scholarship and International Student Development Assistant programme to help developing countries to promote prosperity, reduce poverty and enhanced political stability. Each country has its own priority of study areas, which will link directly to the strategic objectives of the country. Scholarship recipients will receive return and travel, establishment allowance, full tuition fees, contribution to living expenses, overseas student health cover and supplementary academic support. Many of the home government also provides scholarships and loans. Here’s a list of some of the countries that UTS has received sponsor students from foreign government who have sent student to UTS.

Kelly Soo:

This is Priyanka, one of our MBA graduates from 2017. She received the postgraduate academic excellent scholarship. This is what Priyanka has to say to us. “The practical insight in the MBA really teaches you a lot. Every week in our tutorials, we are given exercises that we can accumulate too if we ever did become managers or CEOs. We also have to reflect on the exercises. Reflecting on who you are and where you want to go really helps you understand yourself. The award for me is a recognition of my hard work that UTS appreciates my effort.”

Richard Lum:

Let’s listen to what Devanda has to say about his experience at UTS. This is a testimony from him when he was an Australia Awards Scholarship scholar.

Devanda Simamora:

Hi, my name is Devanda Simamora And I am from Indonesia. I am a former of Australians Awards Scholarship awardees from 2010 to 2012. I am honoured and I’m very fortunate to receive this scholarship, and there is no doubt this ultimately has changed me so much. It’s absolutely an eye opening to learn something different, especially for me and also other students to enhance their knowledge. Currently, I’m working with Australian organisation, DFAT, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the project called MAMPU. MAMPU is Indonesians and Australian partnership for gender equality and women empowerment. I graduated from UTS with Master degree in Information Technology. UTS degree has given me so many benefits in terms of knowledge. I enjoyed my study there and then with fantastic lectures and also in teaching technique. It taught me how to think differently, critically, and be open minded and share the knowledge to the communities and society.

Richard Lum:

So how can we find the scholarship at UTS? Many of you will ask Siri or Google. However, here we will show you a live demonstration on how to find the scholarship on the UTS website.

Kelly Soo:

In your search bar type, UTS. You should see international students as one of the quick links. On the international students page, click on scholarships. You should be able to view scholarships by level of study. Expanding each section will display a list of scholarships.

Now, we’ll show you how to find a scholarship. This is the scholarship search tool. In the previous slide in the previous demonstration, we showed you a list of scholarships by the level of study. You may prefer to use the search tool. If you know the name of the scholarship, type a keyword on the search bar, and it should bring up scholarships that matches that keyword. Alternatively, you can search for scholarships by selecting options in these questions.

Say, for example, I am a new international student from Singapore and I am interested in studying the MBA. The current UTS student question all select, no. No to the current school leader. Yes, as an international student. I’ll have to still find Singapore in the drop down list. I’ll leave gender as it is. For the course type, I’ll put postgraduate coursework, and business for the study area. I’ll hit search and it should bring me a whole list of courses or rather scholarships. I’ll focus on the top three searches. I can see here, the scholarship name, the benefit or value of the scholarship, the application period, and the status of the scholarship. The first and third scholarship are currently open, but the second scholarship tells me it has closed. Perhaps you would like to click into the scholarship name and check out when the scholarship will open for the next application round.

I’ll also show you some information that is displayed if you click into any of these scholarships. Under the scholarship name, you will see some key information, the scholarship status, it will show you open in green or black if it’s closed. The value, the opening and closing dates and perhaps any links that’s relevant to the scholarship, for example, the scholarship application form. Underneath, you’ll see a brief description of the scholarship, the eligibility criteria, selection process, how to apply for the scholarship as well as contact information.

In my earliest slides, there are scholarships that require a separate scholarship application, such as a full tuition scholarship, that is after you have applied for the course. The scholarship application usually ask you some personal details, your educational background, as well as submission of any additional criteria, such as a personal statement or a link to an uploaded video. For scholarships that are ranked, applicants are ranked according to the selection criteria. So pay close attention to what’s written there. I’ll also point out to take note of the opening and closing dates. Look out for information on the how to apply section, as it will tell you the additional requirements.

Finally, you will receive an acknowledgement email after you have successfully submitted an application. Now, majority of scholarships do not require a separate application to the course application, so long as you submit an application for the course, you will be automatically considered for the scholarship. As part of the course offer, we will send you a separate document if you are eligible for the scholarship.

Richard Lum:
