This is the transcript for the video Postgraduate fees for domestic students at UTS
Hi, I’m John from the student recruitment team at UTS. This video will cover the important things you need to know about postgraduate fees including: How tuition fees are charged for postgraduate study at UTS, How to find and calculate your tuition fee, What is FEE-HELP, What is student services and amenities fee and Alumni Advantage Program.
Most of the Postgraduate courses at UTS are offered on a fee-paying basis, which means they are not subsidised by the government. These tuition fees are charged based on the enrolled course rather than the individual subjects. Tuition fees are required to be paid upfront. However, for eligible domestic students you will be able to apply for a government loan called FEE-HELP to assist you to pay your tuition fees.
Now I will show you how to find the tuition fee for the course that you are interested in
Go to the UTS website – uts.edu.au.au. From the homepage, hover your mouse over to future students and a drop-down menu will come up. Then click Postgraduate students. On our Postgraduate Students page you will find a link to the Fees page. You will land on this Fees Tuition search site. After that you will see three blue boxes. Click the left-hand box, ‘Search fees by course’. We’re now on the UTS fee calculator – and there are couple things we have to fill in. So I’ll use the example of ‘Environmental Engineering’ in 2020: Plug in the fee type: Postgraduate Domestic Coursework. Just a sidenote that there are some postgraduate courses which offer Commonwealth Supported Place degrees, however majority are full-fee paying. You can check the UTS website for more information. Fee year: 2020. Cohort year: which is the year you commenced your course also 2020. Course area: you can choose the faculty, or you can choose all. Course code or name: you can put in the course code or all or part of the course name. So I’ll type in environmental engineering. Click search.
The result should come up like a table on the screen. From here, you can see there is a Master, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Environmental Engineering Management. First column is the course code. Then course name. The third column is the Total CP – which is the total credit points required to complete the course. Then is Fee per CP which means fees per credit points. So for example in the Graduate Diploma in Environment Engineering management – it’s 48 credit points multiplied by $650 which equals $31,200. The last column is fees per session – this fee amount is the total amount for each session based on full-time study of 24 credit points. Note some courses have different credit points per session.
If you hover your mouse over the question marks, it will have explanations as well. The key also describes what each of the columns mean.
If we look at Master of Environmental Engineering Management: Tuition fee per session is $15,595 for 24 credit points. The fee per credit point is $650, this amount is rounded up to the nearest dollar. At UTS, the number of credit points in a subject can vary – for this example, the subjects in Environmental Engineering are worth 6 credit points. Therefore, $650 x 6 = $3,900 – which is the price for one subject. For more information, go to the UTS handbook website to check out the subjects and credit point value for your course.
Now onto invoicing fees. For invoicing, tuition fees are charged per session based on the number of subjects and the associated credit points you enrolled in.
The UTS Fees team will start emailing students approximately 4-6 weeks prior to the due dates to advise the invoice is available. You can then request the invoice from the student portal called MYSTUDENTADMIN.
I will now discuss FEE-HELP, the government loan to assist students paying their fees.
The government has created a loan scheme call FEE-HELP to assist fee-paying students to defer their fees to their tax record – similar to HECS-HELP for undergraduate students. If you are an Australian Citizen, Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder or New Zealand Citizen on the special category visa, you will be eligible for this loan.
There is no interest on this loan but the HELP debt you incur will be indexed to Consumer Price Index. There is a lifetime FEE-HELP loan limit and for 2020 it’s $106,319. This loan limit is indexed each year.
From this financial year onwards, this loan becomes renewable which means the amount you pay back, you can re-borrow them again.
The repayment threshold for this financial year is $45,881 and the repayment rate is 1%.
If you are eligible, have not used FEE-HELP previously or have sufficient amount of HELP balance, you can complete the “Request for FEE-HELP” form and provide your Tax File Number during the offer acceptance process.
Apart from tuition fees, there is also ‘Student Services and Amenities Fee’ which is used to support student services like counselling, financial advice, student advocacy and legal services as well as food services, sporting and recreational activities.
This fee is set by the government and is charged in Autumn and Spring sessions based on your study load. For example, in Spring 2020, if you enrolled full-time 18 credit points or above you will be charged a full-time rate of $154, for part-time student they will be charged $77.
For students who are eligible for FEE-HELP loan, they can also apply for SA-HELP which is for deferring this loan.
If you’re UTS alumni – you may be eligible for the Alumni Advantage program which provides a 10% saving on your tuition fees for full-fee paying degree programs including: Graduate certificate, Graduate diplomas and Masters And Higher Degree Research programs including: Doctor of Philosophy and Masters by Research.
